Formoso and Lovewell began to take shape almost simultaneously, as railroads arrived in Jewell County, Kansas, in 1887. Both towns grew initially by poaching businesses and residents from earlier settlements that had already started to dwindle after being bypassed by the railroads a few years earlier. Buildings were hauled a few miles west from White Rock to Lovewell, and north from Omio to the streets of Formoso.
