Jewell County’s Largest Store

"The Mercantile was built, opening for business in October of 1901. No one challenged its reputation as the largest store around, constructed of native rock with a 50-foot frontage of plate glass. An acetylene gas system was installed to fire the furnace and illuminate the store. There was an elevator and a stone vault for housing valuables.” (Text from “Formoso: The Tracks of a Town”)
